Kenya’s diverse cultures enrich the nation with a wide range of delicacies. Tourists are guaranteed to savour in the splendour of some of the most delicious cuisines in the world. Kenya’s rich soils ensure a rich supply of vegetables throughout the year, while the coastal area is famous for its production of tropical fruits and sea food. The coastal region, mainly inhabited by the Swahili, is best known for its unique culinary art which is influenced by both African and Arab staples which will mesmerise every visitor. Do not forget to indulge in `Nyama Choma’, a famous terminology for roast meat, which is very popular in the interior of the country. Visit the Carnivore for its unique grills, the only place in the world where you can taste various game meats in the same plate. Kenya’s main staple food is `Ugali’, which is made from maize meal and can be served along with any kind of cooked vegetable, stew or meat. The abundance of vegetables makes vegetarians feel at home. Also, most Kenyan dishes are served with vegetables. The existence of a huge community of Indians has helped in establishing quite a number of vegetarian restaurants across the country, and particularly in the larger cities. The warm climate is an added value to the lodges and camps all over the country, as meals can be served outdoors, enabling visitors to enjoy their meals while taking in the fabulous scenery at camp sites, lodges and hotels. A breathtaking breakfast in the African bush, after a balloon safari, is a very good example of the culinary experiences possible. Settle back at a lodge or hotel and enjoy a beverage as you watch the sun set in the undulating horizon. Restaurants in Nairobi offer a wide range of cuisines, varying from the traditional to the international food-types like Indian, Korean, French, Chinese, Ethiopian and fast food restaurants. While in Mombasa, do not forget to taste `Pilau’ which is a spicy rice dish, in addition to pastries such as mandazis, samosas and kebabs.

Kenya is a very secure country to visit due in part to the joint efforts of stakeholders in the tourism sector guaranteeing security to all visitors. The ministry of tourism has prioritized the issue of security while safeguarding other aspects that support the smooth running of tourism across the whole country. Consequently, a Safety & Communication Centre was established, under the Kenyan Tourism Federation, to operate around the clock. This centre is a brain child of a joint project between the major players of the industry, tour operators’ associations, hotels, catering companies, KAHC, travel agencies, Airlines, and the Mombasa tourism association.

The Safety & Communication Centre (SCC) employs and trains competent staffers. Information regarding security in general, road conditions, important travelling advice, diseases and any other information that could be of great importance to any of our visitors is supplied by the SCC.

There is a special help line that operates 24 hrs. a day at the disposal of tourists. Most tour operators are connected to this help line via radio, and thus they can reach the centre while on safari in various national parks and reserves.

For more information, please contact the centre (see detail below):

The upright man (Australopithecus Anamnesis) is said to have lived in Kenya’s Lake Turkana some 4.1 million years ago. Also the Zinjanthripus (also known as the black man) lived in this same region 3.5 million years ago. These discoveries were revealed through the excavation of Fossils in the region between 1989-1989.

Bantu immigrants introduced technology to the country in 200 AD while Arabs, who were then trading in slaves, introduced Islam to the East African region in 700 AD. 750 AD saw the first Swahili settlements along the coastal area. Human migration brought the Nilotes from the Lake Turkana region to the Kenyan interior between the 10-14th century. The Nilotes consist of the Maasai, Turkana, Luos, Iteso and the Kalenjin.

During the 13th century, the Bantus divided into two main groups as they migrated towards the central part of Tanzania. This group built their settlements between the Mount Kilimanjaro area and the Indian Ocean. The first group moved towards the north, where they settled and formed the Taveta, Taita and Kamba tribes.

The second group moved towards the Indian ocean, and the neighboring hills, settling and forming the famous `Mijikenda community’, then another group finally moved further towards the west where they settled and formed the Agikuyu, Aembu, Chuka, Tharaka and the Ameru tribes. The 15th century would later be classified as the Golden age for the Swahili civilization.

During the 15th and the 17th century, the Luos migrated from the southern part of Sudan towards Uganda settling around the Lake Victoria region. Thereafter the Luos migrated towards the interior and the Kano area. In 1528, Mombasa experienced its first invasion by the Portuguese. Years later (around 1593), the Portuguese built Fort Jesus in Mombasa. In the 18th century, the Maasai migrated from one area to area in search of a settlement, which they later found in the Rift Valley region.

Dr. Ludwig Krapf, a German and missionary of the Church Missionary Society of England, established the first Christian mission along the Kenyan coast among the Mijikendas. Years later, in 1883, Joseph Thomson became the first explorer to traverse what was known as the Maasai land. Towards the end of the 19th century, the famous Koitalel Arap Samoei, a prophet and leader, would prophecy that a “snake” would tear through Nandi region and spit fire: a theory that would be proven right when the British built Kenya’s main railway line. Koitalel Arap Samoei fought against the railway’s construction for 10 years. The first railway line was completed in 1901 connecting Mombasa and Kisumu at Lake Victoria.

1st June 1963 saw Kenya achieved its independence and to date, the day is national holiday marked to celebrate Madaraka (independence). By 12th December 1963, Kenya became an independent nation. In 1964 it would become a republic with Jomo Kenyatta being her first president. In 1978, Jomo Kenyatta passed away and that paved the way for his first predecessor and the second president of Kenya: Mr. Daniel Arap Moi.

In 1992 the Kenyan constitution was amended to incorporate multi party democracy. In 1997 Kenya celebrates its second multiparty elections with excellent results. Since then Kenya has been steadily climbing up the pluralistic ladder in democracy, setting a remarkable example to the African continent.

There are diverse shopping opportunities in Kenya which range from handmade curios to African art that is unique to Kenya.

The array of unique products that are sold on the Kenyan market include traditional dresses, wood carvings, stone carvings, precious stones, decorated furniture, traditional and modern music, tea, coffee and much more.

Tourists are guaranteed the possibility of visiting different shops and stalls, most of which are scattered across the major cities, even in many hotels. Plan to visit the open air markets where you will be able to purchase original curios while affording you the opportunity to mingle with the local folks. At open air markets, you will be able to acquire products at flexible prices. Be prepared to bargain as this is the order of the day. Bargaining is typical art form in Kenya that is deployed by industrious locals who want nothingmore than to share their culture through their talented wares. The Maasai Market is a must see shop-stop on any given Tuesday in Nairobi.

The Hilton Hotel in Nairobi’s down town has one of the most fascinating art galleries and gift shops in Kenya. The Grand Regency’s gift shop and the city market are destinations that will not disappoint you even though the retail prices are relatively higher than in the open air markets.

While on safari, in various parts of the country, visitors are able to acquire articles too e.g. the Maasai Mara has the Maasai village shop depot, and the same applies for various parts of Mombasa. Your guide could lead you through large communities where you can see hundreds of artists in action.

THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE PARKS IN KENYA.

Just by mentioning the name ‘Kenya’, it is sufficient for anyone to relate to million of images related to animals roaming free in their parks like the Maasai Mara. Thousands of zebras herd in the plains, you might also imagine little elephant cuddled by her mother, crocodiles anxiously awaiting for their prey as they cross the famous mara river during the annual immigration and much more. All this can be experienced in Kenya and will form part of your memories after a safari through the parks of Kenya.

The parks cover an extension of approximately 44.395 Km² a figure that represents about 7.6% of the whole country. You will be able to find about 80 different animal species, ranging from the big five to the antelopes and the tiny dik diks slightly bigger than the hares. There are also about 1500 bird species that make this country a haven for bird lovers.

The most important Parks.

Amboseli: This is a protected area which is located in the southern part of the country and at the feet of mount Kilimanjaro (5896 metres above the sea level). This region is popularly known for it’s enormous herds of elephants that can be easily spotted as they feed along the plains.

Maasai Mara national reserve: This is undoubtedly the most famous reserves in the whole world due to various factors. It is where the unique annual animal immigration between Mara and Serengeti takes place and this phenomenon has made it qualify to be named one of the world wonders.

Samburu and Shaba Reserves: In a strategic location in the north of the central region and Nairobi, within the Samburu area, our visitors will discover not only the park but also the colourful Samburu tribe.

Lake Nakuru National Park: In just a two hours from Nairobi, the Nakuru National park is home to millions of flamingoes covering the lake with a pink mantle and has been rated another world wonder.

Hells Gate national Park: This is one of the few parks in Kenya where the visitor on safari can take a walking tour without the company of a guide.

Mount Kenya National Park: Mt. Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya, boasting it’s 5199 metres above the sea level. This mountain is famous for it’s unique contrast between the warm savannah and the freezing peaks of Mt. Kenya.

Aberdares National Park: With it’s declaration as a National park in 1950, Aberdares National park is one of the oldest park in the country. This is where Queen Elizabeth was declared queen of England in 1950, while on her safari holidays at the Tree Tops Lodge.

The Tsavo National Park: This is undoubtedly the biggest park in the country and is divided into two, Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The biggest elephant herd in the country has been spotted. These elephants usually cover themselves with the red soil, very characteristic of this area, and thus keeping away insects, by so doing they can also perfectly camouflage themselves in the open land.

Tsavo East: It is mainly covered by bush, and visiting this area will bring memories of the forgotten Africa. Tsavo West is located in huge extension of dry lands, and it’s vegetation is mainly bushes and grasslands.

Tsavo West: This park offers a great diversity of habitats though it’s major attraction is the Mzima springs. This is the main source of water to the park. It is said that the source of the springs lies in Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Mombasa: The Kenyan coast is beyond no doubt a great attraction to any visitor. Many usually combine the photographic safari with some few days at the coastal region. It’s magnificent beaches crowned by an important cultural diversity known to few, would fascinate any visitor on holiday. It is a must to anyone who engages in a safari holiday to this great country.

Location: East Africa along the Indian Ocean between Somalia and Tanzania.

Total Area: 582,650 Sq.Km.

Land: 569,250 Sq. Km.

Area covered by water: 13,400 Sq. Km.

Kenya is almost twice as large as the state of Nevada boasting a 536 Km long coast strip along the Indian Ocean.

Borders: The country shares a 232 Km border with Sudan, a 769 Km border with Tanzania, a 830 Km border with Ethiopia, and a 933 Km with Uganda.

Land: Kenya has magnificent stretches of grasslands that extend to the interior where the great Rift Valley divides the country into two. The lower lands stretch towards the Indian Ocean, while the highest peak is Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Geography: The highland areas are primarily agricultural lands, while the glaciers on Mt. Kenya, which has a unique morphology, are a great source of water for irrigation. Mt. Kenya plays a very important role to the country’s economy on agricultural, scientific and tourism fronts.

The Climate: Kenya’s climate is tropical. The coastal area is both humid and relatively cool with average temperatures of 30º C all year round. The Kenyan interior is semiarid with moderate daytime temperatures, coupled with cooler night time temperatures. In the north eastern region, and around the central Aberdare ranges, the temperatures are usually lower especially between the June – September season. The long rain season usually takes place between March and May while the short rain season falls between the months of October through December. The hottest months (or dry season) are usually January, February and August. It is however important to note that Nairobi has been rated in the Guiness book of records, as among the cities in the world with the best climate throughout the year.

Means of Transport: Road, Railway, Maritime and Air transport are all possible in Kenya.

The main railway line connects Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa where the main port is located. This makes it easy to transport goods and passengers from the coastal region into the mainland, or from Lake Victoria to the Nairobi and other parts of the country.

The road infrastructure improved remarkably over the years, and more networks are constantly being incorporated to the national grid in order to increase accessibility. Access roads to Kenyan national parks and game reserves are well maintained to support tourism.

Kenya has two main airports in Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta International airport and The Wilson airport. The Moi Airport in Mombasa was recently upgraded to an International airport, and the Eldoret Airport is in the process of being upgraded.

The national port in Mombasa is the most important in the East African region because it serves a number of landlocked countries. The port is supports the flow of both import and export goods in so doing it plays a pivotal role in the burgeoning East African economy.
