It has been officially said that this year is proving to be the most beautiful. The event occurs around the same time every year and brings millions of animals mainly the Wildbeasts as they cross river mara towards the Serengeti reserve in search for fresh lush. according to the wardens, perhaps close to 2 million animals have crossed the river in a suicidal mission as they are prone to attacks from a huge number of crocodiles within the Mara river. It is said that the reason as to why they usually cross from one side of the river to the other could be due to the smell of fresh grass from the Serengeti after the long rains though no one knows for sure how the call happens.
The annual migration in Mara is a singular event that has recently been named one of the seven new wonders of the world and is an attraction to many holiday makers in Kenya during this period of the year. Kenya saw the numbers of tourists drop down since the year 2007 which was actually a year that set the highest records of arrivals. This trend has however changed this year and indications are that the arrivals this year might outdo the figures witnessed back then despite the financial crisis that has hit the world.
This shows that Kenya has done it’s homework with it’s various marketing campaigns and we might be seeing a big boost with the new constitution that has been adopted as major development in the grass roots is expected hence improvement in infrastructures which will reduce the number of hours needed to travel between destinations within the country. Tourism is the major earner of the economy of Kenya and the government is keen to diversify the product which is mainly the safari, but little has been done to create awareness of other modalities which include cultural safaris, beach holidays in it’s world class white sandy beaches in the lower and north coasts. It is hoped that by 2030, Kenya will be a huge player in the sector worldwide.
On the other hand the little that has been done to market the Kenyan coast is slowly bearing fruits. An acceptable number of charter flights have been operating during the summer between the source markets especially European cities and the airport of Mombasa. Traditional source markets like Italy still keep an eye on the Kenyan Coast, but we also have Germans, and also Spaniards even the French coming back, suprisingly the americans are also back in big numbers and have outdone the Italians which traditionally made the biggest numbers.
Another product that has ever since existed is sports tourism. Little has been done here though we have also seen a vigorous marketing campaigns aimed at attracting golf tourism. Kenya is one of those few destinations which has plenty of quality golf courses, some of them right at the beach front and where golf can be practised during the whole year due to the weather patterns. Athletism also is another sport that has seen some attraction from around the world with some tourists coming specifically to train with some Kenyan renowned athletes, our champions.
